If you smoke artificial cigarettes you are engaging in the new celebrity trend of Vaping. Apparently it's cool to look stupid in 2015. Most of these Vaping devices deliver nicotine, it would of course be cheaper to buy some nicotine insecticide and just lick the lid.
An individual might die immediately but it's simply a faster way to go than slowly poisoning yourself. In Queensland for good reasons liquid nicotine is illegitimate so the Vaping is done using Propylene Glycol or Vegetable Glycerin Liquid.

Decades later well informed people are still taking up smoking in spite of all the known information. The point with this historical background is that Vaping is an unknown quantity. We know it causes mild problems, but the question is given a history of smoking, why in the world would you want to become simply a potential statistic in a brief history of Vaping.
In the words of Wikipedia currently the limited evidence suggests that e cigarettes are less dangerous than traditional cigarettes, and they carry a danger of craving for those taking up the behavior.
So safer than smokes is like saying falling of a motor routine at 100 mph is safer with a head protection on! Which brings me personally to the title of Vaping, the new ridiculous habit.
Think about all the fun entertaining things you could do rather than inhaling a combusted chemical with your lungs, which your body has to then find some way of dealing with, with any luck ,, but I wonder how many smokers have thought the same thing in the past.
Most of the Vaping devices which are promoted to me on the internet come from China, not perhaps the most reliable of chemical sources. Offered the numbers of folks who are taking up at the smoking I'm probably just banging my head on the wall trying to save a few people from themselves.
